Carens article, Aliens and Citizens: The Case for Open Borders,
he insists on open borders. He claims that this idea of free
movement has moral roots in which every human being deserves
freedom and equality. In his article, Carens applies his argument
by refuting three political theories of Robert Nozick,
John
Rawlsand utilitarians. Carens addresses Robert Nozicks theory
by recognizing a common objection towards immigration. Similar to
John Locke, Robert Nozick believes that humans in the state of
nature have natural rights including the right to property as
individuals. However, most people view property rights as
collective or national as seen by popular opinion that Its our

For Carens,
immigration should be regulated when the threat of security and a
massive influx of people disrupt public order. When examining the
utilitarian approach, Carens relies on the basis of the theory to
support his no borders policy. For utilitarians, they strive to
achieve the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people or
maximize utility (Carens 263). Thus, borders should be open to
all people because Carens believes that more people can benefit
from nonrestricted immigration. For instance, with open borders a
free market in labor can flourish, increasing economic benefits for
everyone. After reviewing Carens arguments, I agree with his push
for open borders. In a global world where technology seems to
increase connection and communication, people are still divided and
unwilling to come together. For many people, there is a desire to
express state nationalism and preserve the culture of a country.
However, humans share the right to freedom and equality no matter
the difference in skin color, custom, or distance. Immigration will
change communities, but that change can be for the better. The free
